HABs create green, polluted looking water |
Update as of 7/8/2024: A lake wide caution advisory has been made for Hensley Lake and H.V. Eastman Lake. Please use caution and follow instructions to avoid HABs.
Harmful algal blooms (HABs or blue-green algae) are an annual event in the Central Valley. HABs can create toxins that are harmful to people and animals. Madera County lakes, such as Hensley & Eastman are monitored by the California Waterboard for HABs, but this is not true for all bodies of water within the county (depends on size, ownership & jurisdiction). Protect yourself and learn how to identify HABs on the California Dept. of Public Health HAB webpage.
If there are HABs in monitored lakes, signs will be posted like the ones shown above. Use caution and follow sign instructions.
