While Madera County waits for an answer, the reopening of the hospital means so much to the community, County Supervisor Leticia Gonzalez showed up for Tuesday's vote even though she just gave birth.
"This item is so important to us that I came in from maternity leave to ensure that we voted on this," said Gonzalez. "I have an 8-day-old back in the back right now."

“In the last few months, I have participated in a number of meetings regarding the Madera Community Hospital closure,” Gonzalez said. “I have listened to and spoken with concerned residents since its closure. Learning about the complexity of hospitals is more than one can imagine. Yet, we have worked diligently with our state representatives and stakeholders to find ways to bring accessible healthcare to Madera County residents.

Supervisor Leticia Gonzalez wants to make sure everyone is going to work together to get the hospital back. “I want to be sure to put a working group together that includes our local, state and federal stakeholders so we are all working together,” she said. “That’s what I’ve seen here today. Everyone wants to see some success come out of this tragedy. It is very devastating for our community. We have several members of the community that will work together.”

Madera County Public Health Director Sara Bosse said the nonprofits help the county with vaccine clinics. Each organization is assigned to canvas the area near a specific clinic to register people and help answer any questions. In response to a question posed by Supervisor Leticia Gonzalez regarding the measured success of the organizations, Bosse said the county looks at the numbers of people going to each clinic to determine the success of each organization.

“We were just trying to figure out a way to provide an incentive for people. Everybody loves food, especially tacos,” said Leticia González, Madera County Supervisor for District 4. González brought the idea to the County Department of Public Health, hoping to encourage more people to get the vaccine.

“Today we visited a Madera County vaccination clinic that is serving communities disproportionately impacted by #COVID19. The site’s administering 450-500 doses per day & is currently vaccinating those 65+ years of age, teachers & school staff, & farmworkers,” Newsom wrote on his Twitter account.
