Steps To Take to Help Find Your Lost Pet

  1. Check out our Animal Services website at MaderaCounty, all animals found are listed on our website. Keep in mind that any animals we bring in that do not have any identification (e.g., licenses or microchips), we can only hold for 72-hours as a "Stray Hold". After the 72-hours, the animal may become available to the public for adoption or rescue.
  2. If your pet has a microchip, it will be held for 10 business days, please make sure you contact your pets microchip company and report your pet missing and verify your contact information is current and up to date.
  3. Don't stop looking for your pet! Keep searching! Many pets are found by residents that may not bring the animal to a shelter for several days or may not have social media to post the animal.
  4. Post flyers in the neighborhood where the pet was lost or last seen. Ask schools in your area if you can post a flyer. Download our Lost or Found Pet Information & Flyer.
  5. Also consider using social media sites like:

  8. Make sure to fill out our Lost Report and email it back to our shelter with a picture of your lost pet.
  9. Keep Searching! Statistically, pets are found within a 1-mile radius from your home.

What To Do If Your Lost Pet Is At MCAS

If your lost pet has been turned into MCAS, please follow these steps to help ensure a happy reunion!

  1. Contact Madera County Animal Services and visit the shelter to redeem you pet ASAP! Or call to schedule an appointment.
  2. Bring all your information that proves ownership of the lost pet (e.g., vaccination and licensing records, pet photos, Animal ID number) to the shelter location where you believe your pet is located. Call MCAS to confirm if you have questions.
  3. Once arriving at the shelter, we can help guide you through the process of making a positive ID, including walking through the kennels to see the animals.
  4. If the pet is yours and you are able to make a positive ID, staff will begin the return-to-owner process so you can take your pet home! Your pet will leave the shelter with up-to-date vaccinations (except rabies vaccine due to no vet on staff) and current license (with proof of rabies) or a 90-day temporary license (with no proof of rabies), if applicable.
  5. If your pet has no form of identification (microchip, license tag, ID tags), or you were unable to be reached at home or via phone when the pet was brought into the shelter, you will be subject to fees to redeem your lost pet.
    • Fees will be determined based on how long the animal has been at the shelter, sterilization status, current vaccine status, current license status, and any penalties assessed.
  6. If your pet needs to be spayed or neutered you can choose the option to re-adopt your pet, which they may have to stay an additional night or two in the shelter, depending on the next available vet transport.
    • The re-adoption option will include the spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccine, annual vaccines/treatments, and microchip with free registration.
