It is important that the information provided on your application is complete and accurate. Incomplete information may result in disqualification from the examination process. Remember that your application is the tool that the Department of Human Resources uses to determine whether you meet the qualifications for the position.

Examination Process

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will generally be invited to participate in the examination process. County examinations are used to identify the best qualified candidates. The examination process may include, but may not be limited to, any combination of the following components:

  • Application Review
  • Education/Experience Rating
  • Written Exercises
  • Multiple Choice/True-False Written Examinations
  • Oral Qualification Appraisals
  • Performance Examinations
  • Oral Presentations

Eligible List

Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list, in rank order based on a calculation of their total score from the examination process. Eligible lists are generally active for a minimum of six (6) months up to a maximum of two (2) years. The duration of the eligible list is determined by the Civil Service Commission.

Certification

The names of the top five (5) ranks on an eligible list are certified to the department with the vacancy. The department will generally interview each candidate and has the authority to hire any of the candidates certified to them. If more than one (1) vacancy exists within the department, one (1) additional rank may be certified for each additional vacancy.

Veteran's Preference

Generally, in open examinations veterans qualifying for preference will, upon attaining a passing score in all phases of the examination process, be given a preferential credit of five points if the veteran is not disabled or ten points if the veteran is disabled. Veteran's preference points are not generally granted in promotional recruitments.

In order to be considered for veteran's preference points, applicants must submit a copy of their DD-214 with their application.
